The problem

The project focuses on a real case: the modernisation of the A1 motorway through the Mugello — the eighteen kilometres between Barberino di Mugello and Calenzano, due for completion in 2027 — with viaducts and tunnels worked at height. High-altitude construction, anything above two metres on scaffolding, frameworks or aerial platforms, is among the most dangerous environments there is, and the numbers are stark: around eighty workers on site are covered by only two nurses.

Height alone is not the whole risk. Wind, rain and poor visibility take away footing and judgement; fatigue and a lapse in attention stretch reaction times; and equipment used in haste, or without adequate training, turns a routine manoeuvre into a fall.

When someone falls or collapses, a chain of phone calls begins, and roughly fifteen minutes pass between the emergency call and the rescue. Interviewing the site nurses surfaced the reason why: a construction site is not a fixed map. Access points and call locations shift as the work advances, so reaching the right spot means extra detours — and detours cost minutes that trauma, from internal bleeding to cardiac events, does not give back.
