Hygiene in microgravity

The project begins with a question the space industry has never really solved: how do you take care of your body without gravity? On the ISS there is no shower and no dedicated space to wash. Astronauts clean themselves with wet wipes and rinse-free shampoo, swallow their toothpaste for lack of a sink, and wring out towels by hand — because water, in orbit, does not fall.

Research into past attempts — the Skylab and MIR showers, the zero-gravity concepts of the seventies — showed why the problem persists: water temperature is hard to control, cleaning is slow, and droplets accumulate on sensitive areas and float free, contaminating the cabin. Add the lack of privacy and the cramped, shared common areas, and personal hygiene becomes one of the least resolved aspects of daily life in space.
